Movie News, Movie Reviews, and Features With Your Time in Mind
Branching out to watch a genre you don't normally watch on Netflix is great until the system decides that genre is all you should watch going forward, as is the case with streaming Good Sam on Netflix.
With every intention of writing a review of Netflix’s Good Sam, I booted up the Roku and clicked play. I did manage to get to the beginning of the second act before realizing Good Sam is another Netflix-Hallmark movie type that is not ever going to keep my attention for its entirety. The choice to watch Good Sam on Netflix, though, even for 25 minutes, has lasting negative effects.
Netflix thinks you want to watch every Hallmark-type movie on the streaming service and worse afterward. Even the action and adventure recommendations now have a romantic angle. Thankfully, I did watch Brian De Palma’s The Untouchables recently and the suggestions based on that choice remain and are better, although Gangster Squad really needs to go. (Have I mentioned lately how much I want a Netflix blocking feature?)
My Netflix suggestions are now full of movies I would never want to watch. An algorithm fail on the part of Netflix and the fact that I can’t refresh suggestions one thing on a long list of why Netflix needs to upgrade its user interface. And based on many of the suggestions, I am a teenage girl.
Until I watch enough movies or TV shows to wipe the memory of Good Sam from my Netflix user interface, this is what I am stuck with as suggestions.
And if you think deleting Good Sam from my history would work, I tried it. Rodeo & Juliet is still taking up prime space.
There are positive suggestions: Bad Moms and Easy A. I had no idea either was available to stream on Netflix right now because the search function is terrible. FYI: I am not in the United States presently, so knowing what is coming or going from Netflix in my territory is not easy.
Consider it a warning and a rant. I’m warning you that if you decide to watch Good Sam on Netflix, you may likely hate what you’re stuck with as suggestions afterward. On the rant side, Netflix, why not take the extra money you are making with the price increase, and instead of giving it to an A-list star, improve the user interface. Let subscribers choose what they want showing on their home screen, and tell your engineers that just because someone watches a romance movie once does not mean they want to watch another and another every week forever.
As for Netflix’s Good Sam, it’s not a terrible film if you enjoy the Hallmark genre of movies. Yes, Hallmark is a genre in my mind and many others. So, watch Good Sam on Netflix if you’re interested. I have no idea who the Good Samaritan is in the movie because I could not get through it, but perhaps you will, and it may bring a rush of joy and a tear to your eye – as only the best Hallmark movies can.
