Spending time with Charlie Hunnam and Lizzy Caplan together in an interview setting was anything but structured, cohesive, or lacking in humor. Promoting their new film 3,2,1…Frankie Go Boom, it was a refreshing interview as the two actors had a great rapport with one another; they were constantly laughing, telling jokes, sparring with sarcasm, and for the most part making it extremely difficult to get a straight answer about anything. It was one of the best times at an interview I have ever experienced, because it was unpredictable. Here is a highlight reel of their best commentary. Warning, it does not make much sense as a whole, and that is kind of the point, but please be aware that everything was said in jest, and should not be construed in any other way when/if possible.
Let the fun begin…
Ron Perlman has a mangina, according to what Frankie (Charlie Hunnam) saw under his dress.
Lizzy thinks Charlie’s upcoming movie Pacific Rim sounds dirty. I assured her it would be given the X-rated treatment by next Summer, much to her excitement (wink, wink).
Charlie has not seen Lizzy’s new movie Bachelorette but he was startled that it costs $9.99 On Demand. He defended himself by saying he and his girlfriend have seen Bridesmaids. The sarcasm there was not lost on Lizzy, or the rest of us in the room.
Charlie cut off his locks to play Frankie. According to Lizzy, he cried about it; and Charlie does admit he was a crybaby in need of some hand holding.
The entire film was shot in 20 days with no money at all. No one was getting paid and that created an energy during filming, a fun and free feeling like Summer Camp.
Lizzy is a huge fan of the entire cast in the film, except Charlie (Hunnam).
Impotence and Alcoholics Anonymous should be equated to one another–according to Lizzy.
Charlie’s initial reaction to the material (impotence) was “no, its not for me, its not what I do.” It became a fun challenge for him. For the past five years he has been playing a character very close to who he is (Jax Teller on “Sons of Anarchy”). Given the small nature of the film “if everyone was bad and it sucked no one would ever see it anyways. If we succeed with the comedy and everyone wants to go out and see the movie all the better.”
How is it Charlie, working for somebody like Kurt Sutter (“Sons of Anarchy”), and then Jordan Roberts (Frankie Goes Boom)?
“Wow, let me just chart a course through this minefield.”
When making a movie “the director has power, but so does the actor. After you get two weeks into filming they can’t fire you anymore.” – Charlie Hunnam
Charlie’s goal, and Lizzie’s as well, is to become so successful as an actor and a writer that he has complete control and everyone has to do what he says. Then he wins the whole world.
There is a great deal of power struggling going on [in Hollywood] because there are a lot of healthy egos and there is a jockeying for the alpha-male position between a male actor and the director – Lizzy Caplan
Charlie does not find it jockeying, but Lizzie does and she has a theory about the need for power.
He cuts her off to say, “I HAVE A HUGE COCK” so it can’t be about that. “Save it sister.”
The tough guys, or the guys who think they are tough, are all wearing make-up. – Lizzy Caplan
Candy necklaces and pasties do not keep you warm. Lizzy was freezing the entire shoot.
Charlie had to stop smoking in his trailer because it was leaking gas below. He literally would have been a “Frankie Go Boom”–yes, that was my stupid retort to his story.
Lizzy would like a butt double in a movie, for once. It is all her in Frankie Go Boom. When she gets one she will know she has finally made it, and you would be shocked at who uses doubles in movies–everyone!
There you have it, the highlights from my interview with Charlie Hunnam and Lizzy Caplan for 3,2,1…Frankie Go Boom. It was much more fun in person, and I do wish the audio was better to post for all of you to hear, but well, things happen. Now go and watch 3,2,1…Frankie Go Boom On Demand or In Theatres October 12, 2012.
