Film Review
Young romance is sweet, at times simple, and altogether tragic. Tyler (Robert Pattinson) is dealing with the untimely passing of his brother, Michael. Ally (Emilie de Ravin) is haunted by the murder of her mother, when she was only a child. When these two meet it may be under unusual circumstances but what transpires is desperately common and only makes the film all the more enjoyable. This is not a film where the story, the romance and familial drama, are unlikely or hard to believe. There is no forcing their emotions or overdramatizing the conflicts. It is honest and real with characters who are far from perfect but battling emotions as those in the “real” world may. The film grabs you from the beginning and builds until the final moments. In the end it feels like it may be cheating to gain your sympathetic empathy but the emotion passes and suddenly you realize this is not a love story about two people. It is much larger than that and full of much more depth than the surface layer may suggest.
Robert Pattinson as Tyler is charming; Emilie de Ravin’s Ally admirably complex yet simple in her quiet, introverted manner. The pairing of the two as lovers is quite perfect. Their time together is sometimes awkward, other times easy, occasionally sexy, and always believable as two people learning to love each other while trying to also love who they are and will become. On the family side of the film Tyler is also paired excellently with his absentee father, Pierce Brosnan (Charles) and little sister. When Charles and Tyler come to blows, so to speak, you may as well be watching an actual son and father yell, scream, and accuse each other. When they are saying as little as possible, the tension is so incredibly thick you can feel it in your seat. The connections between these characters, and the rest in the film, only make it into a strong character piece of believable proportions.
