'Mary Poppins Returns' soundtrack wants you to fall in love with its all-new music -- and you just might.
"A Spoonful of Sugar" may not be present but you'll likely find something new to sing along to in 'Mary Poppins Returns'.
The infectious tunes from Mary Poppins, such as “A Spoonful of Sugar” and “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious,” are a tough act to follow. The Mary Poppins Returns soundtrack, featuring 27 tracks, is up for the challenge. It has nine brand-new songs that were created to advance the plot and enhance the characters, as it should be in a musical. The composer to thank for that is Marc Shaiman (“Hairspray,” “South Park”) plus lyricist Scott Wittman (“Hairspray,” “Smash”).
Mary Poppins Returns soundtrack has vocals from many of the film’s stars: Emily Blunt, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Meryl Streep, Pixie Davies, and Dick Van Dyke. You can even hear Ben Whishaw and Angela Lansbury on it, too.
The Mary Poppins Returns Soundtrack Isn't Just Like the Original
A surprising exclusion to the Mary Poppins Returns soundtrack is “A Spoonful of Sugar.” “Let’s Go Fly a Kite” isn’t making an appearance either.
Perhaps the filmmakers realize you don’t mess with a perfect thing. Odds are “Can You Imagine That?” is the Mary Poppins Returns song you will be humming on the way out of the theater. But “The Place Where Lost Things Go” and “Trip A Little Light Fantastic” are quite infectious, too.
The Mary Poppins Returns soundtrack arrives on December 7, 2018 — almost two weeks before Mary Poppins Returns’ release date of December 19, 2018. That gives you plenty of time to learn every song on the soundtrack so you can sing along in the theatre. (It’s unknown whether Mary Poppins Returns will get sing-a-long screenings but it should.)
Here are seven of the new songs the soundtrack for Mary Poppins Returns features.
- “The Place Where Lost Things Go”
- “A Cover is Not the Book”
- “Underneath the Lovely London Sky”
- “Turning Turtle”
- “A Conversation”
- “Nowhere to Go But Up”
- “Trip a Little Light Fantastic”
I’m going to leave the final two as a surprise for when you grab the soundtrack and listing out the entire soundtrack isn’t going to happen either.
