Scream Factory, the horror imprint of home video distributor Shout Factory which fans have lovingly dubbed “the Criterion of horror,” announced plans for ten new blu-ray titles during their Friday night Comic-Con panel. Here are the newest members of the Scream Factory Family:
The Dark Half – George Romero’s adaptation of the Stephen King novel about a writer with a strong alter-ego, starring Timothy Hutton and Amy Madigan.
Monkey Shines – Another George Romero film, this one featuring Jason Beghe as a quadriplegic with a very possessive helper monkey.
Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh – The sequel to Candyman, directed by Bill Condon and again featuring Tony Todd in the title role.
Scarecrows – The William Wesley film about, well, killer scarecrows.
Invaders from Mars – Tobe Hooper’s 1986 remake of the 1953 sci-fi classic, starring Karen Black, Bud Cort, and Louise Fletcher.
New Year’s Evil – Emmett Alston’s rockin’ New Year’s Eve time-zone slasher, with a classic soundtrack featuring the music of Shadow and Made in Japan.
Phantom of the Opera – The 1989 version of the classic Gaston Leroux tale, with Robert Englund as the Phantom and Jill Schoelen as his muse.
Dolls – Stuart Gordon’s creepy little flick about a group of people stranded in a house full of spooky toys, produced by Charles Band and featuring cool stop-motion animation by David Allen.
Mad Max – The first movie in the Mad Max franchise, starring Mel Gibson in the role that made him a star.
Escape from New York – John Carpenter’s post-apocalyptic vision of an America where New York is a maximum security prison, introducing Kurt Russell as the iconic Snake Plissken.
Some interesting selections here. Some don’t seem like Scream Factory material (Mad Max), while others seem like they should have gotten the Scream Treatment a long time ago (Dolls, New Year’s Evil). Little is known about the releases except for the fact that Dolls, Mad Max, and Escape from New York will be Collector’s Editions. However, Scream Factory is renowned for their quality work, so fans can expect amazing transfers, sweet audio, and lots of cool special features. Dolls, The Dark Half, and Monkey Shines will hit in November and the rest will trickle out sometime in 2015.
