The moment has arrived, Universal unleashed the first trailer for Jurassic World. Call it a re-boot, a re-make, a complete waste of time, or the best thing to come in 2015. Whatever you do, don’t ever tell this movie lover that you don’t care about Jurassic World; my bite is ferocious.
From the trailer, there are questions that will surely be raised. My biggest one is whether or not there will be a reference to the prior three films, or whether Jurassic World is poised to stand on its own and in fact be a new telling of the famous story about the dinos we love ever so much on screen. The trailer makes me think that it is an entirely new story, with the park being created anew and any signs of the past washed away by Hollywood’s ever-present eraser.

Why?
Raptors. By now we have all learned that the raptors in Jurassic Park were fictitiously created for the benefit of the silver screen. They were trouble back in the day when dinosaurs ruled the earth, but tiny. Very tiny. The presence of “big” raptors in the final seconds of the Jurassic World trailer cause alarm. If man did not learn that breeding raptors was a terrible mistake after what happened in the first three Jurassic Park movies, he surely would have by now. Right? Not exactly. Man loves to repeat his mistakes, and it is possible they genetically altered raptors to be more friendly this time around. Maybe we can communicate with them, and use them like a pack of dogs to hunt prey, thanks to the grand knowledge of Dr. Alan Grant. Or perhaps Dr. Ian Malcolm’s “life will find a way” philosophy stands true and raptors came to be because they were meant to be. Or its just a re-boot of the franchise and we have to learn all over again that raptors are bad, very bad. They hunt in packs, in case you forgot, and are highly intelligent beings.
That leads to my next question about the Jurassic World trailer. What new dinosaur did they create? If you listen to the sounds it makes it is very raptor-like. But big, very big–like, T-Rex big. How much fun would it be to have a T-Rex -Raptor hybrid? Can you imagine a dinosaur with the intelligence of a raptor but the bulk and strength of the T-Rex. Sounds amazing, right? That is what I think. I also know it is the worst idea any scientist could ever come up with when deciding to create a new dinosaur. Why must we always create a predator? Can we not be happy with a pet dino, one you could adopt and take home with you as a souvenir from the park? I would walk mine on a leash with great enthusiasm. Again, this looks to be a whole new story where man must learn from his mistakes again. As much as we may wish it was not that way, it appears the filmmakers behind Jurassic World cannot escape the ever-present cyclical theme of the first three movies.
With all of the excitement I hold for Jurassic World, there is one thing that makes me incredibly upset. Where are the birds? Am I the only one who nearly squealed with delight when they were shown at the end of Jurassic Park 3, flying away from the island to discover a new world for themselves? I fear we may have to settle for giant dino-crock who eats dead whales instead. My disappoint is great, but again, this is not a continuation of the original Jurassic Park franchise…or is it?
I am very confused. I’m going to watch the trailer again, as should you.
