The Answer Man may be considered a romantic comedy but it offers up a great deal more. This movie is by far a character piece as it centers on showing the traits and little quirks of each individual. The Answer Man is full of moments that will make you think deeper about life, love, and sadness and the ways in which people deal with these issues individually or with the help of others.
Acting
The Answer Man provides a great deal for Jeff Daniels (Arlen Faber) in terms of his acting range. He is great being at once a crotchety, sarcastic, and disdainful lonely man only to switch magnificently to one overcome with puppy love. It is a wonderful blend of his comedic abilities and dramatic flair coupled with a sense of wisdom beyond his years. The Answer Man is held up by his performance and whether he is being funny in his coldness for the world or sweet and clueless in his love life it is impossible not to enjoy the character created in Arlen Faber.
Comedy Factor
The Answer Man’s comedy stems from the relationships between people and the ways in which the many characters try and acclimate themselves to new surroundings and others. This is a quiet film, full of emotion and careful planning of dialogue. The laughs are not aplenty, nor do they present themselves in a manner where you know this is a moment to laugh. The humor you will find in The Answer Man depends on how you view a scene, a moment, or a line of dialogue. For everyone the comedy here will differ, but it is present on a level for everyone at times.
