Film Review
When chronicling an individuals’ past, especially an iconic figure, it is essential to give a fluid representation of time and place and motivation. This movie neglects to adhere to a any sort of real structure and briefly glances over most of Amelia Earhart’s life; it’s only explanation seems to be the repetitive notion that “she must fly” to give reason to the entire film. Instead of a well-rounded depiction of her life and story we are given small moments that only occur after her rise to stardom began. There is no backstory to this film as it solely represents the Amelia the public may have known. A choice was made with dire results as instead of seeing a rare glimpse into her private world, you are merely given a live action newspaper re-enactment.
For a screenplay whose main focus is on one character its rendition of her is poorly managed and seemingly one-dimensional. She comes across as merely a woman in love with flying who is indifferent to love, family, friendships, or even knowing and understanding herself. Along with the strong focus on her flying, and flying alone, it does not forget to paint her personal life like a tabloid story leaving you to paint her in a somewhat undesirable light at times during the film. This lack of character development or any semblance of an arc for Amelia is only made worse by the ability of Hilary Swank to carry the performance of the character. Swank is wholly believable and up for the challenge of being Amelia yet she never receives the opportunity to really dig into the character and make her her own due to the writing. This representation of an iconic figure who changed history, both in the sky and on the ground for women, has fallen short of all expectations and possibilities.
