The rock music festival, a staple event in every culture, country, and a right of passage for many a youth yearning for days on end of unadulterated partying, live-music, and the possibility to connect with like-minded attendees. There are a few such festivals that take place every year, made iconic over time for the spectacle they create. One of the largest resides in Scotland, “T in The Park“, over the course of 3-days during the Summer. It was there, in the Summer of 2010, that Director David Mackenzie shot the film Tonight You’re Mine; completely on location and with the full cooperation of festival director Geoff Ellis.
Tonight You’re Mine begins harmlessly enough as a love-story between two musicians. Adam (Luke Treadway of Clash of the Titans) is an indie rock star musician, the lead singer of the duo The Make. Morello (Natalia Tena of “Game of Thrones”) is part of a struggling all-girl punk band, The Dirty Pink’s–a name synonymous with the female genitalia, and therefore open to ridicule and jests. Adam and his bandmate Tyko (Matthew Baynton) arrive at the festival in pure rock star fashion. Framed in a tight close-up they are seated in the back of a teeny tiny European car, guitars in hand, singing one of their hits acoustically as the car makes its way into the festival parking lot. Fans swarm, security arrives, and everything is maintained…until they encounter Morello. The instant antagonistic relationship between Morello and Adam is established, but a strange and mysterious figure, well, not so strange really as he is a festival worker, takes it upon himself to handcuff Morello and Adam together, and then disappear. With only three hours to go before her band performs Morello goes into an angry-sarcastic tinged panic, Adam thinks the entire thing is all too entertaining. The dueling would-be lovers are stuck together, searching for the mysterious guardian angel amidst the crowds of festival attendees, the all-night partying, their respective boyfriend and girlfriend not taking kindly to the situation, and the music. Tonight You’re Mine begins as a love story, it ends as a character study of the music festival ethos.
The love-story narrative of Tonight You’re Mine slowly falls to the wayside as the film plays. Morello and Adam are likable enough, but the chemistry between the two is never outstanding nor are their characters in any way interesting. This is mostly in part to Treadway’s performance as Adam, wherein he lacks the charisma needed to be considered a rock star adored by many with an abundance of talent. The Make’s finale performance is something out of a different era, more INXS of yesteryear than modern. But Morello’s The Dirty Pink’s steal the screen during their performance, and Natalia Tena every scene she appears in, even with Treadway by her side. The addition of a side-story with Tyko and the band’s manager gives a glimpse into the other side of fame; the loneliness it propagates and the need for companionship, heavy amounts of liquor as a numbing agent, and of course, sex with a stranger. It is here that Tonight You’re Mine embraces the fact that it has become a movie about the festival, creating a character that is spoken for through the human characters actions and emotions. The action that abounds between everyone creates a whole entity, of the festival experience, and this is the defining interest in watching Tonight You’re Mine. The music festival is an experience to behold, and through cinematographer Giles Nuttgens, the second unit of cameras, as well as director David Mackenzie filming on-the-fly as well, the festival comes alive in a variety of ways, transfixing the viewer on the experience of being there, not so much as being led by any one character except the festival itself.

Tonight You’re Mine is a free-wheeling rock ‘n’ roll love story set against the raucous magnificence and unforgettable sounds at a leading music festival – The T in the Park festival in Kinross-shire, Scotland.
Adam (Treadaway) and Morello (Tena) have a big problem. It’s not that Adam is the heartthrob lead singer in a famous electropop band or that his girlfriend is a spoiled supermodel. His problem is Morello’s problem. Morello’s problem isn’t that she’s lead singer in a struggling post-punk riot girl band or that she’s dating a banker. No, her problem is that she has to perform the biggest gig of her life at a music festival while handcuffed to the kind of person she totally despises – Adam. So begins an out-there odd-ball romantic comedy filled with lust, mud, betrayal, booze, portaloos and a hundred thousand people partying to the greatest music in the world. None of whom seems to have the key – not to the meaning of life – but to the handcuffs.
