Are you looking for a new fantasy series to binge-watch on Hulu? The upcoming adaptation of Stephen King’s 'The Eyes of the Dragon' may be what you’re looking for, especially if you like 'The Dark Tower' and 'The Stand.'
Hulu is hoping to have the next must-watch fantasy series thanks to Stephen King’s ‘The Eyes of the Dragon.’ The streaming giant who is no stranger to hit shows – “The Handmaid’s Tale” has a new season premiering in June 2019 – is developing a pilot based on ‘The Eyes of the Dragon,’ with Seth Grahame-Smith of The LEGO Batman Movie penning the first episode and taking up the role of showrunner, according to Deadline. Does a Stephen King ‘The Eyes of the Dragon’ TV series have what it takes to please fantasy lovers? Yes.
Published in 1984, The Eyes of the Dragon takes place in the realm of Delain, following two prince brothers and, of course, power. At the core of the drama is a magician named Flagg who is close to King Roland. When Queen Sasha has a son, Peter, who is heir to the throne, Flagg feels threatened. It only gets worse when she is pregnant with another son, setting Flagg off to mortally wound the queen and get rid of the future king.
There is poisoning and murder and a king who is only the tender age of 12 when it’s all said and done, with Flagg holding immense power, plus faeries, elves, and dragons. ‘The Eyes of the Dragon’ is a Stephen King novel after all, so expect twists and turns and darkness, but not horror. The book is a fantasy epic, and that made fans of the novelist angry at the time of its release – of which he reportedly mirrored in ‘Misery.’
The fun in ‘The Eyes of the Dragon’ TV series can also be found in its connections to ‘The Dark Tower‘ and ‘The Stand.’ The mythology of ‘The Dark Tower’ is present in ‘The Eyes of the Dragon,’ and a major villain from ‘The Stand’ makes an appearance. Hulu may have a hit on its hands with ‘The Eyes of the Dragon’ TV series if it can pull off adapting such a large-scale epic for the small screen. HBO managed with “Game of Thrones,” and Hulu has Disney behind it now, so budgeting should not be a massive issue, although Fox21 is the official studio.
‘The Eyes of the Dragon’ is not the first Stephen King adaptation for Hulu. “Castle Rock” premiered in 2018 and has a second season on the horizon.
For now, we wait for Seth Grahame-Smith to get going on Stephen King’s ‘The Eyes of the Dragon’ TV series for Hulu, and keep his word to honor the source material.
“I am so excited to be working in the world of Stephen King with with Hulu, which has such a terrific track record with Stephen King adaptations,” Seth Grahame-Smith told Deadline. “The goal for this series is to feel unlike any Stephen King adaptation before, with this rich underlying source material, and the only true fantasy book he wrote that has kings and swords and princesses. We will honor the spirit of the book and the legacy.”
